Hi, I am Karen!
I’m an Irish registered Dietitian with loads of clinical and research experience in dietetics. In 2000, I was lucky to be diagnosed with endometriosis in Belfast (thanks, Dr. Tharma!). I’ve faced endometriosis challenges firsthand. In 2022, I upskilled my dietetic nutrition training at Monash University in Australia.
Nutrition was identified as a superpower tool to improve both irritable bowel syndrome and endometriosis. I’m here to help you harness the power of nutrition for better hormone health and overall well-being and get a significant reduction in pain, fatigue, and gut issues when diets are modified.
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting the whole body, where tissue similar to the womb lining grows outside the uterus, causing pain and inflammation.
This tissue can appear on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, bowel, and other areas.
It thickens, breaks down, and bleeds with each menstrual cycle but has no way to exit the body, leading to inflammation, pain, and scar tissue.
The condition ranges from minimal to severe, with varying degrees of lesions and cysts. Symptoms include pelvic pain, painful periods, and difficulty getting pregnant. It’s linked to infertility in up to 49% of women in Ireland. Good nutrition can reduce inflammation, protect fertility, and improve egg and sperm quality, helping to manage symptoms effectively.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis typically comes through keyhole surgery, and the proposed treatments are often hormonal or surgical. While these can provide some relief, they are not without their side effects. I’ve journeyed through this path, undergone multiple surgeries, braved hormonal treatments, and come to terms with the loss of body tissues, organs, and systems. It’s been a journey that’s had its share of challenges.
My Mission
As someone living with endometriosis, I truly understand the struggles of managing this condition and how tough it can be with the limited services available. My own family had to travel abroad for the best excision surgery to protect fertility and prevent adhesions and organ loss.
Having walked this journey, myself and supporting my family through it, I know how vital good nutrition and lifestyle strategies are for reducing inflammation and taking control of endo. I’ve worked with many women who have had both excision and ablation surgeries, and I saw the need for a holistic approach. That’s why I founded Nutridoc—an online platform dedicated to providing women with nutritional advice to manage endo flares, protect fertility, and improve quality of life.
Nutrition is one of the top three treatments for endometriosis, helping to reduce symptoms by up to 80% and potentially decreasing the need for hormonal treatments and surgeries.
My Passion
Endometriosis has no cure, but it can be managed through diet. This is why I upskilled and trained in specific dietary management at Monash University. It’s not just about eating healthy—it’s about the nutrition based on 3 Pillars:
